Starting on College Avenue south of the Rockridge BART, this free virtual walk led by Bob Johnson and Janet Byron, co-authors of Berkeley Walks, explores tree-lined streets with diverse early 20th-century Craftsman bungalows, before ascending the hills to see how the area was rejuvenated after the disastrous 1991 fire storm. There will be architecture—including some mansions, flowering trees and gardens, views and yes—lots of fun public stairways to go up and down (virtually)!

Janet L. Byron, originally from New York, has now lived in Berkeley, California for more than half her life. Heyday founder Malcolm Margolin’s East Bay Out was the first walking guide she purchased, and it introduced her to the joys of exploring nature on foot. She has subsequently led walks for numerous local groups and has served on the boards of several local organizations. She attended the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley and works as a science writer and editor. Janet lives in West Berkeley with her daughter. Photo credit: Richard Price.
