Berkeley Then and Now: A virtual guided tour

April 29, 2021 | 7:00 pm 8:30 pm

A virtual guided tour of sites in Berkeley as they were in the 1960s and 1980s and as they are now.

Join Berkeley Historical Society for a look at how things have changed in Berkeley from the perspectives of walking tour guides Tina Jones Williams, the Berkeley-native author of the Julia Street Series of novels set in South Berkeley, and Bob Johnson and Janet Byron, who arrived (separately) in Berkeley in the late 1980s and became friends and co-authors of Berkeley Walks. From the city dump to People’s Park to restaurants and retailers, much has changed in Berkeley—often for better and sometimes worse—while plenty has stayed the same.

About the Speakers

Janet L. Byron

Janet L. Byron

Janet L. Byron moved to California from New York in 1989 to attend the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. The first walking guide she purchased was Heyday founder Malcolm Margolin’s East Bay Out, and it introduced her to the joys of exploring nature (and cities) by foot. She has subsequently led walks for numerous local groups and served on the boards of Greenbelt Alliance and Berkeley Path Wanderers Association. Photo credit: Steve Price.

Robert E. Johnson

Robert E. Johnson

Robert (Bob) E. Johnson has lived in Berkeley for close to forty years. Bob has led group walking tours around the Bay Area for groups such as the Greenbelt Alliance, Berkeley Path Wanderers Association, the Berkeley Historical Society, and Bay Nature magazine, and he served on the board of Greenbelt Alliance for almost 30 years.
