Heyday's Publishing Internship Program

Heyday's volunteer internship program is intended to give interns marketable publishing skills and to offer an introduction to the publishing process. Internships may be offered in the areas described below, depending on project needs at the time

"Heyday is an admirable organization and I appreciated the opportunity to contribute to and learn from a company that does such wonderful things. My supervisors really made an effort to give me important, interesting tasks beyond the menial work that characterizes most internships."—Gina Kessler, Sales & Marketing intern, Summer 2004

Research

  • Excellent for students in the humanities or social sciences, aspiring writers, anyone passionate about the topics represented by the Heyday list, the research internship affords a firsthand look at how manuscripts develop. Interns will participate in the collection of material by using libraries, the Internet, interviews, and other resources. There are opportunities for both text and graphic research, and intern research may be incorporated into the relevant manuscript. Research internships can also include light writing (captions or author biographies), database maintenance, scanning, and manuscript-to-manuscript proofreading.

Editorial

  • Interns working in the editorial department primarily assist with document scanning, organizing permissions requests for particular titles, proofreading galleys, reading manuscript submissions, and attending to various administrative tasks.

Marketing

  • A marketing internship will provide an introduction to the world of publicity, promotion, and sales in the publishing industry. Interns in this department might assist the marketing and publicity director with research for potential media for specific books, help set up events and assemble press kits, help with mailings and database maintenance, or write letters on behalf of the marketing department.

Magazine Publishing

  • Interns working with News from Native California magazine will gain knowledge of the world of (nonprofit) magazine publishing. These interns assist primarily in the marketing and public relations department of the magazine, helping to expand the subscription and advertising bases and develop promotional materials. There are also opportunities to perform research relating to upcoming magazine articles and features. The internships are valuable not only for students of communications, mass media studies, journalism, social sciences, and the humanities, but also for anyone seriously interested in developing networks with Native California communities.

Special Projects and Development

  • Special Projects interns work with Heyday Institute to advance projects outside of the normal realm of publishing, such as community programs. Previous events coordinated by Heyday have included the Berkeley Poetry Celebration, a Bay Area Pre-History Conference, and a literary exploration of the Central Valley.

We ask that interns commit to work with us for eight to twelve hours per week for a three-month period: fall (mid-September through mid-December); winter/spring (February through April); or summer (June through August). Longer internships (4–6 months) are also available with the marketing department. Course credit can be arranged for university and college students.
