Wander through any downtown in California, and you will find the courthouse, the universal symbol of justice, law, and hopeful dreams for the future. This majestic building looms over its neighbors, proud of its history and place within the city.

With elegant photographs and informative text, Courthouses of California reveals how the role of the courthouse has evolved from a small building dedicated to trial and study into a full service administration building. Events including fires, earthquakes, floods, and the march of time have forced communities to rebuild, with each generation invariably leaving its architectural mark on the new courthouse.

Courthouses of California is a carefully researched and superbly designed photo-documentary book chronicling 150 years of judicial architecture in California. With introductory essays by distinguished members of the fields of history, law, and architecture, and lavishly illustrated with hundreds of photographs, Courthouses of California honors and preserves the rich history of these public buildings and offers a unique window into the civic aspirations of California.
