A California Legacy book

Of elk, grizzlies, and red-tail hawks—a literary anthology of our fellow creatures.

T. C. Boyle on the cunning of the coyote. Ishmael Reed’s unease with the domestic cat. Barry Lopez on the splendor of white geese. George Sterling’s song of the abalone. Charles Bukowski’s ode to the mountain lion…

From Native American tales and explorers’ accounts to fiction and poetry by established and emerging writers, this new anthology is a playful exploration of how animals excite our imagination and compassion. Each piece in the anthology is a snapshot of a different animal, with “field notes” preceding each selection. The book also includes a collection of artwork and a timeline of animal-related milestones in California.

A one-of-a-kind collection, Califauna not only encourages us to indulge in the richness of the animal world but also celebrates the creativity our fellow creatures inspire in us.

Califauna includes literature by: Mary Austin, Ambrose Bierce, T. C. Boyle, Charles Bukowski, Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Robert Hass, Helen Hunt Jackson, Robinson Jeffers, Ursula K. Le Guin, Jack London, Barry Lopez, David Mas Masumoto, John Muir, Ishmael Reed, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, and others.

Reviews:

“Once the world was rich. Now it is diminished, and the best measure of this loss—and the latest wrinkle in our identity as Californians—is the pleasure that writing in Califauna offers.”—Thomas Curwen, Los Angeles Times

“Highly recommended for California literature collections and for literature collections in public and academic libraries.”—Library Journal

Califauna is…an important book for the state of California. These essays, poems, and excerpts are windows onto the romantic California of recent history and its most native inhabitants, seen through the eyes of some of the earliest and most articulate modern visitors of the area.”—The Bloomsbury Review
