Welcome to News from Native California
Welcome to News from Native California, a quarterly magazine devoted to California's indigenous people. Regular features, such as our Calendar, announce and report on Native events. Feature articles range from ceremonial regalia and traditional use of tobacco to environmental issues and California archaeology, all emphasizing Native Californian points of view, historic and contemporary. We also regularly feature poetry, short stories, plays, and literary non-fiction by California Indian writers. Regular columns address California Indian languages, the arts, books, skills & technology, law, and more.
We hope that you will enjoy News from Native California and that you will let us know what features you like and what you would like to see in the future.
We hope that you will enjoy the resources offered here! |

California Indian Publishing Program
While News from Native California has in fact thrived over the years, it is also a project housed within the larger non-profit organization known as Heyday. Heyday is an independent, nonprofit publisher and unique cultural institution. We promote widespread awareness and celebration of California’s many cultures, landscapes, and boundary-breaking ideas. Through our well-crafted books, public events, and innovative outreach programs we are building a vibrant community of readers, writers, and thinkers. We’re especially noted for our California Indian Publishing program, which celebrates Indian culture by publishing News from Native California and books on Native life; hosting Indian events; and helping provide reading material to community members who would not otherwise have access to quality Indian publications.
It is no secret that over the years, News from Native California has been nourished by contributions from over 300 individuals and institutions who have donated gifts for operating expenses or specific projects. If you would like to support News from Native California and other California Indian Publishing programs, join The Publishers Club by clicking on the text below. Thanks!
