Help shape California's literary legacy. Be a Friend of Heyday.

Why is Heyday important? How is Heyday different?

Heyday has maintained its zest and passion for independent publishing since it was created in 1974. It specializes in books on California and the West-- and within this niche, our range is enormous. We work with many of the major institutions in the state, but we have also worked on a smaller scale, for example, producing a bilingual book in English and Karuk, a supple, expressive native Indian language from the upper Klamath River that has fewer than a dozen speakers today. We have put out the first published works of previously unknown poets while at the same time worked with established writers like Gary Snyder and Ursula K. Le Guin.

Why does Heyday need my help? What will my money support?

In 2004, Heyday Books became a nonprofit institution, and like many nonprofit cultural organizations, we find that our earned income isn't quite sufficient to fund all the books we plan to put out and would like to put out. We are thus soliciting your generous support to:

  • Produce important and daring books that need to, and deserve to, be seen and heard
  • Shape California's literary legacy, publishing works that capture the spirit of each generation and preserve it for the next
  • Support our publications with an array of educational outreach programs at libraries, museums, schools, and community centers
  • Expand and deepen our unique list of publications

A Note for Friends of News from Native California

While News from Native California has in fact thrived over the years, it is also a project housed within the larger non-profit Heyday Institute. It is no secret that over the years, News from Native California has been nourished by contributions from over 300 individuals and institutions who have donated gifts for operating expenses or specific projects.

To avoid the sheer confusion and heartache of keeping the two Friends organizations separate, we have decided to merge Friends of News into Friends of Heyday, and ask that with your renewal, that you select the button marked "Join FOH and donate to Heyday's CIPP". That way, we can continue to honor your support for News and to acknowledge your generosity in the magazine and related reports, on our website, in our catalogs, and books.
